HUNTINGBURG — Jane Hendrickson stood at the end of a developed road in the first section of Hunters Crossing Wednesday morning, watching the progress being made on the first three houses that are in the construction stage.

“Things have progressed fast,” the owner of Indianapolis-based Boxer Girl LLC said. “That’s great. We wanted to get this done and move to the next section.”A thin layer of snow laid where grass will be in the spring. “Gotta contact the landscaper,” Hendrickson reminded herself while walking back to her SUV.

Boxer Girl is the developer of the subdivision, which, when completely finished, will include 144 single-family homes along the west side of North Chestnut Street between 12th and 17th streets. The project is part of the city’s Stellar Communities initiative, which includes several development projects throughout the city.

The subdivision is being developed in four sections. The first section is big enough for 37 homes. Boxer Girl has completed the work to prepare the site for the homes by installing roads, utilities, streetlights. Wireless service will be completed next week. Landscaping will be done when weather allows.

Hendrickson comes down to Hunters Crossing every week to see the progress, work with local vendors and the city, and to engage with the public. She uses Current Blend as her office space and has Crystal Buehler of Huntingburg-based Buehler Designs as her marketing assistant.

“I use local companies as much as I can,” Hendrickson said. “As part of my bid for the project, I pledged to do that.”

Along with Buehler Designs and Current Blend, Boxer Girl used Knies Construction as the site contractor; Cash Waggner & Associates for civil engineering; Bingham Greenebaum Doll for legal services; German American Bank; Gehlhausen’s Flowers & Gifts; Styline Printing for banners; Fat & Sassy and Milk Parlor for catering; and Chocolate Bliss and Jasper Popcorn Company for gifts.

The subdivision has been called “workforce housing” and has received tax increment financing to be developed as such. But the subdivision will be for anyone who wants to move in, Hendrickson said.

“We see empty nesters moving in,” she said. “People who are older or want a change. Everyone is welcomed.”

Jagoe Homes of Owensboro is building the houses. Depending on the style chosen, homes will be between 1,154 and 2,594 square feet and cost between $155,900 and $235,500. Those interested can go to Jagoe’s website,, to see the styles of homes available.

Although people can now start purchasing homes to be built in the first section of Hunters Crossing, the official ribbon cutting will be in March. At that time, visitors will be able to tour through a model home that is now under construction.

The Chestnut Street area has already seen some traffic, with drivers and walkers stopping by to check out the construction.

“People are interested,” Hendrickson said. “Just this morning, there’s been at least eight cars that have driven in here, just to look. And that’s fine. We want people to know what we’re doing.”

Hendrickson said the site needs to have 75 percent of the homes complete before she will move to the next section of the subdivision.

“This will be a beautiful place,” she said. “We’re now just waiting on neighbors to move in and make it a neighborhood.”
